Cozy Blanket Ministry

HOW YOU CAN HELP BLACKHAWK PRESBYTERY'S NEW

COZY BLANKET MINISTRY

EVERY CHURCH CAN PARTICIPATE, LITERALLY, AS THERE ARE A VARIETY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES WITH THIS WONDERFUL MINISTRY SPONSORED BY PW

Are YOU the leader we’re looking for?

Led by the Presbyterian Women’s (PW) organization from the Presbytery level, this new, exciting, beloved ministry currently being launched in support of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City, IL, is actively looking for a leader for the long-term. If you know anyone who may have an interest in helping to enable the ministry long-term, click here for our Leader Information Sheet and pray about it for a bit. Then, if you feel encouraged and led to ask for additional information about leading this exciting and engaging and very meaningful program long-term (or at least for several years), do let us know, and let’s talk!

Are you interested in crafting items to be given?

There are two needs here. One is to make hand-crafted blankets of any size or shape that are meaningful as an heirloom quality gift or to hand-write notes in greeting cards that are appropriate to go along with these wonderful gifts for various blanket receivers. Both of these needs are going to be detailed in upcoming flyers that will help everyone understand exactly what is needed and how to engage in helping this ministry to succeed. So keep an eye on the Cozy Blanket Ministry link within the Presbyterian Women section of Blackhawk Presbytery’s website. It may take a week or two to be posted, but we are collecting questions today to make sure we know what is needed to help people through those flyers.

Are you one to take the blankets to those who need a touch from God?

We would love to enable everyone and every church in our Presbytery to implement this ministry in time, if not soon! For we believe it is meaningful to a degree that makes it extremely worth-while to engage. So if you’re new to this type of ministry we are eager to help you engage, making sure you have plenty of blankets and greeting cards, whatever makes sense for your team to distribute. And, if you’re already crafting blankets and need additional blankets for your ministry, just let us know and we’ll do all we can to direct resources to further enable your success. So please call, and let’s get started!

You’re not crafters, but you’d like to help?

There are teams in our Presbytery who craft up to tens or hundreds of blankets a month or a quarter… many of them! And, they’d surely appreciate your help. Can you provide supplies and other resources to get the blankets to those who need them? If you can provide financial donations or gifts-in-kind such as nice pieces of cotton material, thread, batting, safety pins, and yarn to our crafting teams, we will be delighted to get you connected so you can help, too. There’s a place for us all in this ministry, literally!

Thank you for your heart to help! Together we can do much to enable wonderfully fruitful outreaches throughout our fine Presbytery! If you would like to discuss this ministry opportunity further, please contact Beverly Scharlau, 815-667-4970 or e-mail: tkdo1961@gmail.com.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN LAUNCH

NEW COZY BLANKET MINISTRY

FOR USE BY ALL WHO WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A HAND-MADE BLANKET TO SOMEONE IN NEED

The New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City, IL, is looking for help through the new ministry that is Presbytery wide in scope, but we are seeking to align to help with their need until their need is satisfied. Following the second devastating tornado to strike within the confines of Blackhawk Presbytery this summer, our Coal City church found itself looking for ways to respond. Many women of our Presbytery had been busy crafting beautiful quilts and other blankets and were anxious to place them in the hands of people in need. Coordinated by the Presbytery’s Presbyterian Women’s (PW) leadership team, a total of 37 quilted expressions of love and concern were delivered to New Hope’s new pastor, Rev. Mark Hughey, in Coal City where under his leadership, members of the church have been distributing them to victims of the tornado. Thus the new Cozy Blanket Ministry was started!

With Presbytery-wide help, New Hope would like to continue to extend God’s comfort and touch by giving a hand-crafted blanket to each household that suffered significant damage in these recent storms. PW is looking for any type, any size, previously un-used, hand-crafted blanket (crocheted, knitted, quilted, knotted, embroidered, etc.) to be distributed to victims of the disaster by the Coal City team. A healing service is being planned for mid-November to be presided over by Pastor Mark and other local pastors and other neighborhood-oriented outreaches, too, are likely where they would like to hand-deliver 200 to 800 of the hand-crafted beauties to those in crisis as a result of the natural disasters. There are more than 880 families seriously affected in total, and it is Pastor Mark’s desire to deliver a blanket to each family or each family member, if possible.

Can we do it? Are there enough crafters, individuals and teams, in the Presbytery to enable this pastor’s new ministry of choice to serve his community in need as they also help with cleanup, housing work teams, and other support for the victims? Details are still being arranged to transport donated blankets to Coal City in time for that large event expected to be held in mid-November. Contact Beverly Scharlau if you would like to participate in the new Cozy Blanket Ministry (815-667-4970 or e-mail: tkdo1961@gmail.com) as a church, as a team, or as an individual who can help in some way.

Also, would you like to lead similar outreaches for disaster victims or others in need of God’s loving touch within your community in some manner? If so, Pastor Mark will be delighted to help with ideas and the practical needs for implementing similar outreach initiatives within your own church. Just give him a call (630-276-8843 orrevmarkhughey@gmail.com).

Please help publicize this in your church bulletin or newsletter and spread the word to interested friends.

FOR YOUR BULLETIN:

The women of Blackhawk Presbytery are invited to participate in the new Cozy Blanket Ministry. This is not the Church World Service program, but a new ministry intended to leverage the wonderful skills and hearts of our women to meet needs locally. The New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City is needing 200 to 800 (yes, those numbers are correct) blankets of all shapes and sizes and types (lap blankets and prayer shawls included) that are either knitted, crocheted, quilted, knotted, embroidered, or otherwise hand- or machine sown. If you would like to help meet this need, contact (insert the name of your local PW leader) or Beverly Scharlau, 815-667-4970 or e-mail: tkdo1961@gmail.com. There is information available about the new ministry on the Presbytery website (please include the link), including a flyer appropriate for printing for your pastor or Session.
