2020 February Presbytery Meeting

The Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Blackhawk was held on February 11, 2020 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, DeKalb, IL. Meeting highlights:
  • Worship featured parting words from General Presbyter, Rev. Dr. John Rickard who reminded us that God's salvation is woven through our individual stories as we connect with each other and do our part to further God's kingdom on earth. John was also honored with gifts, presentations and thanks for his 18 years of service to Blackhawk Presbytery and Stronghold.
  • Rev. Beth Wagner began our year-long series "The Church in Transition" with reality checks, challenges and talk of canoes and sailboats...
  • Following a successful examination, the Presbytery warmly welcomed Jenny Hubbard as she looks forward to her ordination and installation as Minister of Word and Sacrament to Au Sable Grove Pres. in Yorkville.
  • Presbytery was also delighted to Commission three new Pastors: JD Buchenau to Pontiac First, Faith Herout to Morris First and Mike Engle to Winnebago First. Congratulations to Pastors and congregations!
  • Approved with sadness the request from Oregon First Presbyterian to dissolve their congregation and appointed an Administrative Commission to work with them in this process.
  • Voted to concur with three Overtures to General Assembly including one originating from two Blackhawk pastors ("Regarding Worship Resources for Ministering to Veterans")

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY - The Church in Transition

The first our 2020 series, the February seminar is titled: “Why Church That Was Isn’t Anymore” – An Overview of Transitional Times. The speaker is Rev. Beth Wagner. Rev. Wagner has served in seven transitional/interim positions in her career including the 2012 federation between Rockford 2nd Congregational and 1st Presbyterian churches. She serves as the Team Leader for the Midwest Initiative for Leading Transition, a group of active and retired pastors and mid-level PCUSA executives dedicated to equipping church leaders for ministry ‘on the edge’. While traditionally, this training has been directed toward pastors, the team is now beginning to adapt their training for lay leaders as well. Blackhawk Presbytery is one of the first to be able to offer this training over the course of the year.
